Alexander Adolph Joseph Ludwig von Berckefeldt

Alexander Adolph Joseph Ludwig von Berckefeldt (twin to Karl Edmund) was b. 9 March 1830 in Münden, Germany, and d. 4 April 1909 in Sacramento County, California. He married Dorothea Otillie Brockhaus, daughter of Hermann Brockhaus and Otillie Wagner, on 4 January 1871 in Leipzig, Germany. She was b. 26 December 1842 in Leipzig, Germany, and d. 10 June 1932 in St. Helena, Napa County, California. They had four children:

  1. Christa O. von Berckefeldt, b. 26 December 1874 in Schwarmstedt, Fallingbostel, Germany, d. 22 June 1939 in Napa County, California. She married Antonio Augusto de Souto and they had two children:
    • Walter A. de Souto, b. 17 January 1896 Napa County, California, d. 15 February 1968 in Napa County, California. He married Anna M. (Selsback) Hoehn. They had no children.
    • Christa Dorothea de Souto, b. 17 January 1896 in Napa County, California, d. 16 August 1980 in Napa County, California. She married (1) Emile Adrien Chaix and they had two children, and (2) Louis Henry Newroth.
      • Jeannette Christa Chaix, b. 25 April 1916, d. 6 March 2010, married Leo Keller and they had two children.
      • Donald Emile Chaix, b. 1 April 1921, d. 12 February 1984, married (1) Marguerite R. West and they had two children, and (2) Helen L. Cole.
  2. Franz von Berckefeldt, b. 17 December 1875 in Viersen, Rheinland, Germany, d. 15 August 1950 in Oakland, Alameda County, California. He married Margaretha Gober, daughter of Paul Gober and Bertha Richter, and they had three children:
    • Bodo Alexander Richard von Berckefeldt, b. 18 June 1909 in Alameda, Alameda County, California, d. 2 April 2003 in Alameda County, California. He married (1) Grace Mathilda Jensen and they had three children, and (2) Laurette Benard.
      • Gail Margaret von Berckefeldt married Arthur Joel Thompson and they had three children.
      • Carol Marie von Berckefeldt married Daniel Bernard Vincent Zundel and they had four children.
      • Jane Grace von Berckefeldt, b. 1 August 1945, d. 10 May 2010, married (1) Stephen H. Cuthbert and they had two children, and (2) Louis William Schmohl and they had two children.
    • Werner C. von Berckefeldt, b. 16 December 1919 in Alameda, Alameda County, California, d. 1 March 1942 in Horry County, South Carolina, near Myrtle Beach.  Died in a training accident while preparing for service in US Army Air Corps during World War II.
    • Theodore Frank von Berckefeldt, b. 4 April 1922 at Alameda, Alameda County, California, d. 28 November 1989 in San Jose, Santa Clara County, California. He married Agnes Elizabeth Hagemann and they had three children.
      • Susan Jean von Berckefeldt married Jeffrey B. Levine, and they had two children.
      • Richard Werner von Berckefeldt married Margaret A. Clausen and they had two children.
      • Janet Marie von Berckefeldt married James R. Martin and they had two children.
  3. Ellen von Berckefeldt, b. 14 March 1877 in Viersen, Rheinland, Germany, d. abt 1960 in England. She married Arthur Heath. No known children.
  4. Frieda Carola von Berckefeldt, b. 24 April 1880 in Voerde, Dinslaken, Germany, d. 14 June 1921 in St. Helena, Napa County, California. She married (1) Willis Harold Penland, son of Isaac Penland and Susan March, and they had three children. She married (2) Wilhelm Frederick Isert and they had two children. [photo: Frieda and family]
    • Edward Alexander Penland, b. 17 December 1898 in St. Helena, Napa County, California, d. 27 December 1986 in Napa County, California. He married Dorothy Delight Wagner and they had three children.
      • Edward Charles Penland, b. 15 October 1924, d. 29 January 2006, married Helen Patricia Doherty and they had three children.
      • Donald Rudolph Penland, b. 25 January 1926, d. 3 March 2007, married Elizabeth Emma Demauro and they had four children.
      • Robert Keith Penland, b. 20 July 1928, d. 19 November 2010, married Ferral G. Calhoon and they had three children.
    • Herman A. Penland, b. 1901 probably in Napa County, California, d. 23 December 1937 in Sutter County, California, married Lenora M. Hemstreet and they had one child who died young.
    • Rudolph A. Penland, b. 1903 probably in Napa County, California, d. 17 December 1927 in Marysville, Yuba County, California. He married Mary Alice Holshauser.  Rudolph and Herman operated a candy store in Marysville, CA.
    • William Alexander Isert, b. 24 July 1905 in Alameda County, California, d. 15 February 2004 in Placer County, California. He married Ann Sipe and they had three children.
      • Carol Ann Isert, b. 23 January 1935, d. 7 July 2016, married (1) Arnold Haller and they had four children, and (2) Jon Saunders
      • William Alexander Isert, Jr. married (1) Joan Sparks and they had one child, and (2) Valerie Valentino and they had two children.
      • Robert Clayton Isert married Janet L. Robinson.
    • Raymond W. Isert, b. 18 July 1917 in Stockton, San Joaquin County, California, d. 7 November 2001 in Volusia County, Florida. He married (1) Thelma Lee, and they had one child, and (2) Katherine Laura Egbert.
      • Franklin W. Isert, b. 10 September 1940, d. 27 January 2010.
